After 11 days of immersive learning at the Intervention in Wild Animal Health Course in WRTI, Kenya, our team had a well-deserved day off to recharge. With fresh energy and renewed focus, we dove straight into one of the most anticipated sessions—Wild Animal Restraint and Anaesthesia Techniques—led by esteemed experts in the field, Dr. Nic Masters, Dr. Parag Nigam, Dr Amanda Guthrie, Dr Isaac Lekolool, and Dr Titus Kaitho.

Wildlife veterinary interventions require a delicate balance of skill, precision, and planning. Ensuring the safety of both the animal and the team is paramount, making this session a crucial component of our training. To maximize hands-on learning, we were divided into four specialized sections: planning, equipment preparation, anaesthesia monitoring and finally darting practise at which of course we all became experts, even our Professor Lee Skerratt!

As the day ended, we reflected on the immense responsibility wildlife veterinarians hold in ensuring humane and ethical interventions. With this newfound expertise, we look forward to applying these best practices in the field—contributing to the conservation and health of wild animal populations worldwide.

Stay tuned for more updates from our journey in Kenya!
